fAPAR (fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation) estimates at various scale

چکیده
This paper reviews the several methods available for estimating the fAPAR, both at local and large scale. The fAPAR definition is first discussed with regards to the directionality of the incident radiation. Then, the several techniques to estimate fAPAR from local ground measurements are reviewed with emphasis on the sampling strategy. We then describe methodologies to upscale fAPAR measurements over larger spatial domains. The several medium resolution fAPAR products available at the global scale are then presented. These products are intercompared over a sample of sites representative of the global domain. Finally, the accuracy of the products is evaluated against the fAPAR values derived from ground measurements. Conclusions are drawn on the suitability of the current products for vegetation monitoring and modelling and ways of improvement are proposed.

New developments in the remote estimation of the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation in crops
[1] The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation, fAPAR, is an important biophysical characteristic in models of gas exchange between the terrestrial boundary layer and the atmosphere, as well as in the analysis of vegetation productivity. Synoptic estimation of fAPAR has been performed by using NDVI as a linear proxy of fAPAR, despite the saturation of NDVI at fAPAR beyond 0.7....

This paper describes the combination of terrestrial vegetation observations from two sensors, providing a historical dataset used for an in-depth analysis of the corresponding spatio-temporal patterns. The Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) is an important variable suitable for regional to large-scale monitoring of climate impacts on vegetation. In this work, we cr...
متن کاملEstimation of rice production at regional scale with a Light Use Efficiency model and MODIS time series
This study presents the application of a Light Use Efficiency model that exploits MODIS satellite data to assess rice yield in Italy. Field experimental data acquired in 2003 and 2004 were used to define model’s parameters (Radiation Use Efficiency and Harvest Index) and to calibrate the relation between MODIS-EVI and the fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR). Satelli...
متن کاملValidation of the Operational Meris Fapar Products
This paper discusses the validation of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) land product which corresponds to the biophysical variable of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value acts as an indicator of the presence and state of the vegetation and it is currently estimated from MERIS data at both reduced and full resolution ...
متن کاملTime-series validation of MODIS land biophysical products in a Kalahari woodland, Africa
Monthly measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR) taken at approximately monthly intervals were collected along three 750 m transects in a Kalahari woodland near Mongu in western Zambia. These data were compared with MODIS NDVI (MOD13, Collection 3) and MODIS LAI and fAPAR products (MOD15, Collection 3) over a 2 year period (2...
